For the second edition of TOO HOT TO BE COOL in August 2024, we once again curated a collection of short films designed to ignite both information and emotion about the urgent need for climate action. This time, proceeds were donated to Youth Climate Action Network Vietnam, to support young people on the frontlines of climate change.
Our selection of videos explores themes of youth, generations, and the stark divide between rich and poor countries. While maintaining an entertaining tone to fit with the event’s atmosphere, these videos offer powerful insights into the realities of climate change and the imperative for immediate action.
Youth for Climate Action: Breaking Barriers
This inspiring film features two young activists from Africa, who are passionately advocating for climate justice and the importance of youth empowerment. Their stories highlight the challenges faced by young people in developing countries, but also their hopes, and the urgent need for global action.
Cut for Time: Climate Change (Saturday Night Live)
A satirical look at the disconnect between some celebrities and the urgent realities of climate change. This parody from US comedy show Saturday Night Live also highlights the importance of understanding the basic science of climate change in order to take effective action.
(a tip for actor Blake Vilanti: how about joining a Climate Fresk workshop to learn the basics?)
Dear Future Generations: Sorry
This thought-provoking film features a person from the present day apologizing to future generations for the environmental damage caused by humanity. It serves as a stark reminder of the long-term consequences of our actions and the urgent need for change.
Somebody Ask Us
A haunting nursery rhyme that transforms into a nightmarish vision of a future ravaged by climate change. This video highlights the devastating impact of climate change on children and the need for adults to prioritize their well-being.
Bonus: Opening Music Video – Gojira, Amazonia
To set the tone for the event, we selected Gojira’s powerful music video for “Amazonia.” Renowned for their lyrics about the environmental crisis, Gojira is a world-acclaimed French metal band that made history by becoming the first metal band to perform at an Olympic opening ceremony in Paris earlier this year. Their music serves as a powerful reminder of the urgency of climate action and the need to protect our planet.
About TOO HOT TO BE COOL
Launched in April 2024, TOO HOT TO BE COOL is a grassroots initiative dedicated to raising awareness and funds for climate action through a series of rock events in Tokyo. Powered by a dedicated team of volunteer contributors, the series is gaining momentum, attracting talented local rock bands and passionate supporters. The first two editions of TOO HOT TO BE COOL have generated over 300,000 yen for climate non-profits in Japan and Vietnam. With each event, TOO HOT TO BE COOL continues to grow and expand its impact, demonstrating the power of music and community to drive positive change.
Ichigo Bloom offers climate and biodiversity collaborative workshops such as the Climate Fresk and the Biodiversity Collage, to raise awareness and ignite change within organizations in Japan.
