The Digital Collage
by

The Digital Collage is a dynamic, collaborative workshop that helps participants uncover the often invisible environmental and social impacts of digital technology. From smartphones and laptops to cloud computing and data centers, the workshop offers a systemic view of how our digital lives shape – and are shaped by – the world around us.

Using a collaborative card-based format, the Digital Collage invites participants to reconstruct the lifecycle of digital devices and services — from the extraction of raw materials to manufacturing, everyday use, and eventual disposal as e-waste. Along the way, participants uncover key environmental and social challenges: energy consumption, resource depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, labor conditions, and the mounting volume of electronic waste.
The workshop is rooted in scientific research and lifecycle assessment data, but its strength lies in making this complex information accessible, visual, and engaging. It highlights the often-overlooked realities behind the technologies we rely on daily, while also showing that small changes in behavior, design, and policy can lead to meaningful impact.
Whether you’re new to the topic or already familiar with sustainability issues, the Digital Collage encourages open discussion and collective problem-solving. It’s an empowering experience that helps individuals and organizations rethink their digital habits — and take action toward a more responsible digital culture.
For companies
Raise awareness among employees, especially those working in IT, sustainability, or digital transformation. Use the workshop as a team-building moment to promote responsible digital practices and align internal policies with environmental goals.
In local communities
Support citizens, public staff, or NGO teams in understanding how digital habits affect energy use, waste, and equity. The workshop fosters critical thinking and inspires new ideas for digital inclusion and sustainability.
In schools and universities
Help students and faculty understand the real-world consequences of the technologies they use every day. The workshop can support courses in environmental studies, business, or digital literacy — or serve as a starting point for student-led initiatives.
