Learn & Do:
Urban Nature

See biodiversity loss and renewal side by side: a science-based workshop, followed by hands-on activities on a working urban farm in Tokyo.

The workshop: Biodiversity Collage

A collaborative, science-based workshop exploring the drivers and consequences of biodiversity loss, built on IPBES research. In 3 hours, participants map how ecosystems connect to food, water, climate and daily life, then close with a group discussion on what can be done to protect them. For clients with limited time, a shorter format from the same developers, the Ecosystems Domino (30–90 minutes), is also available. The workshop is led by Ichigo Bloom’s certified facilitators.

The activity: Urban rooftop farming

Art Farm Ikejiri runs an urban rooftop farm at Home/Work Village in Setagaya, Tokyo, growing vegetables, fruit and herbs in the middle of the city. After the workshop, participants move to hands-on activities there, in small rotating groups.

A typical program includes harvesting seasonal vegetables and herbs from the rooftop plots, making fresh herbal tea from what they’ve just picked, and a hands-on introduction to composting as a way of closing the urban food loop and building healthy soil. Sessions can also include a guided visit to the farm’s apiary, in collaboration with Beeslow, introducing participants to the role bees play in pollination and biodiversity.

The farm also runs a small vineyard, a farm-to-table kitchen, and seasonal events, so the program can be adapted around what fits your group.

The Biodiversity Collage was so engaging that the three hours flew by. Although the topic is complex, the creative way it’s presented made it easy to appreciate the wonder of biodiversity. By the end, participants felt grateful for the rich ecosystems around us.
