Digital Collage
Uncover the hidden footprint of our digital lives. A collaborative science-based workshop for anyone who uses digital technology – which is everyone.

What is the Digital Collage?
The Digital Collage is a collaborative workshop that uncovers the hidden environmental footprint of our digital lives. From the smartphone in your pocket to the data centers powering every search and stream, digital technology accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire global truck fleet. Using a set of illustrated cards, participants work together to map the causes and consequences of digital’s environmental impact. They leave with a clearer picture of what’s at stake, and a stronger sense of what they can do about it, as individuals and as organizations.

How a session unfolds
Digital technology touches every part of our lives. This workshop helps understand what that costs the planet and what we can do about it.
Comprehension
In teams, participants identify and draw the links between the cards to build the full picture of digital technology’s environmental footprint.
Creativity
Participants illustrate their key messages and give their collage a title, making the content their own and building team spirit in the process.
Debrief
Each team presents their collage to the others. The facilitator provides feedback and recaps the key messages.
Action
Participants discover the action cards and discuss together which ones are most relevant to their context, as individuals and as an organization.
A few stories
Building a sustainable IT culture
Geneva, Switzerland
The Geneva Graduate Institute, one of the world’s leading institutions for international relations and development studies, organized a Digital Collage session for members of their Tech Hub team in December 2023. The session explored the environmental, social and geopolitical implications of digital technology, from device manufacturing to data center energy use. The results were displayed at the HR department and the Tech Hub, and a second session was planned for the following spring.

A session for international business in Tokyo
Chiyoda, Tokyo
In February 2026, the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan organized a Digital Collage for their member companies and partners. For international businesses operating in Japan, understanding the environmental footprint of digital technology is becoming both a compliance issue and a conversation starter with clients and stakeholders. A morning of cards and conversation that left participants with a clearer picture of what their digital habits actually cost the planet.
When your product is part of the solution
Zama, Kanagawa
ebm-papst, a European manufacturer of energy-efficient industrial fans, ran a Digital Collage for their entire Japan team in April 2026. The workshop was both a teambuilding moment and a way for the team to deepen their understanding of the market they serve, including data centers, where energy-efficient cooling is becoming a critical sustainability issue. Held at their demo center in Zama, the session helped the team connect their product’s value proposition directly to environmental challenges.

Awareness-raising is an essential first step toward more responsible digital practices. The Digital Collage allowed us to engage our teams on a future-critical topic in a playful way, one that doesn’t feel like a constraint, while giving them practical knowledge and good practices to take forward.
