Sustainability Workshops for Schools
Connecting young people in Japan with the science behind climate change, biodiversity loss, and other global environmental challenges.

Ichigo Bloom is a collective of sustainability educators delivering collaborative, science-based workshops across Japan, in English and Japanese. We work with high schools, junior high schools, international schools, and with the right format, upper elementary school students. All our workshops are made in Europe, and facilitated in English or Japanese by our certified facilitators.
The gap we need to close
77% of youth in Asia-Pacific aspire to work in the green economy. Yet 68% of junior high students in Japan say they feel confused or apathetic about climate change. The disconnect is not a lack of concern, it is a lack of clarity. Young people sense that something is wrong with the planet, but struggle to understand how the pieces connect. That is exactly what our workshops are designed to fix.

How our workshops work
Our workshops are built on a simple principle: people understand complex systems better when they build them together. Every session is collaborative. No passive listening: all participants have to think and speak. All our workshops follow a 3-steps approach:
Head: Comprehension
In small teams of 4 to 8, participants use illustrated cards based on science to piece together issues like climate change or planetary boundaries breach.
Heart: Creativity & Emotions
Participants add colors and sketches, then express their emotions, positive or negative, in face of the environmental challenge they see.
Hands: Discussion on Actions
The session ends with a collective brainstorm: what can we do, individually and collectively, to build a more sustainable society?
Benefits for schools
- A shared, accessible understanding of international environmental science, in a tested and approved format used by millions globally
- Development of systems thinking, teamwork and communication skills for your students
- A versatile format that fits your curriculum, sustainability days, or orientation weeks
Three ways schools use our workshops
These are the most common formats we see – but the limit is your imagination!
Curriculum integration
A workshop is embedded into an existing subject (e.g. geography, science), connecting lessons to a collaborative exercise.
Onboarding and orientation
A shared experience at the start of the year gives an entire cohort a common language and foundation before their studies begin.
A dedicated day or event
Workshops can anchor a sustainability day, a student summit, an event with families, or any other special occasion.
Recommended workshops and age
We offer workshops for a wide range of ages and levels. For elementary schools and junior high schools, we recommend Climate Fresk, Biodiversity Collage or Digital Collage, all accessible from around 9 years old through a Junior version (fewer cards, simplified content, shorter duration). For high schools, we recommend the Climate Fresk, Planetary Boundaries Fresco, Digital Collage, Biodiversity Collage, or 2tonnes; we use the Adult version of the workshops for participants from 14-15 years old.
We can also train your facilitators.
Thanks to our facilitator training, your teachers, staff or students become certified to run the workshops themselves, multiplying the impact. Once trained, your facilitators keep the certification – wherever they go next. High school students carry with them into their university, and later in their company – where our workshops are also fully relevant. Training is available in Japanese and English, for small groups starting from 4 participants.
A few stories from high schools in Japan and the world
Japan: Climate science at the German High School
Deutsche Schule Tokyo Yokohama, Japan | January 2026
Students at Deutsche Schule Tokyo Yokohama explored the climate system through a Climate Fresk session integrated into their geography curriculum. With around 40 participants, the workshop gave students a chance to consolidate what they had already learned in class, dive deeper into the connections between causes and consequences, and start imagining changes they could make, at school and in their everyday lives.

Singapore: Climate science at a girls school
Singapore Chinese Girls’ School | May 2025
Over two days in May 2025, students from Singapore Chinese Girls’ School joined SeaKeepers Asia for a Climate Fresk session. 34 participants explored how human activities, climate change, and ocean systems connect, and left with a clearer sense that their own actions are part of the picture.
Australia: Sustainability Week, every year
Fort Street High School, Sydney, Australia | Since 2023
Since 2023, Climate Fresk has been a fixture of Fort Street High School’s annual Sustainability Week, reaching around 130 students each year. The school has gone further by training its own teacher-facilitators, meaning the workshop now runs independently – no external facilitator needed.

Japan: Digital technology under the microscope
British School in Tokyo | June 2026
The British School in Tokyo has been running a Climate Fresk session for its Year 11 students every year since 2024, as part of their post-exam activity week. For the 2026 edition, they chose the Digital Collage, a natural fit for teenagers, as the workshop explores the environmental footprint of the devices they use every day.
Japan: From daily habits to national policy
UWC ISAK Japan, Karuizawa | October 2025
We facilitated a Climate Fresk for 35 Grade 10 students, with 26 nationalities in the room, our most international school session to date. Framed around leadership and action, as part of UWC ISAK Japan’s “Project Week” 2025, the session quickly went beyond everyday habits: one group spontaneously designed a blueprint for a national emissions trading scheme – a level of systemic thinking that surprised even us. France: For all high schools in a region
Île-de-France region, France
The government of Île-de-France, where Paris is located, funds free Climate Fresk sessions for all high schools in the region, making it one of the first local governments in the world to institutionalize the workshop at scale. For schools in the region, there is no cost: the programme is open to all.
